30/12/2011
Candy, candy, candy! Typically during hard times businesses that sell or make candy or chocolate confections do very well. There are reasons for this that include:
1. Cholocate is a comfort food
2. Most people can afford the luxury of a piece or ten of candy, even in a recession
3. It can be a great, low cost and yet very special gift
4. Children love candy
That last point is important. Parents and grandparents will sacrifice and not buy luxuries for themselves, and still buy small luxuries for the children in their lives.
In the United States the National Confectioners Association reported that, “The confectionery industry as a whole grew 3.7 percent during the 52-week period ending April 19 in 2011.” Experts will tell you that history has born out the wisdom of starting a candy or chocolate business in bad times. Many chocolate candies that were started during the depression are still going strong today. These depression-era candies include bestsellers:
- Tootsie Pops
- Snickers
- 3 Musketeers
